The American Humane Association estimates over 10 million dogs and cats are lost or stolen in the U.S. every year. Unfortunately, only 15-20% of dogs and less than 2% of cats are ever reclaimed by their owners.
The best way to increase the chances of finding your lost pet is having them microchipped. This procedure takes just seconds and provides you with the comfort and peace of mind that your pet will always find the way back home.
How does it work?
A microchip is a small device about the size of a grain of rice that is implanted beneath your pet’s skin. Microchips are designed to work for up to 25 years.
Each chip contains a unique number that is used to identify the lost animal. This number links to your contact information in an online registry that allows shelters, veterinarian clinics, and humane organizations to contact you if your lost pet is found. Each microchip contains a registration number and the phone of the registry for the particular brand of chip.
A microchip is NOT a GPS or tracking device. You cannot get information directly from the microchip. The lost pet needs to be brought to a shelter and scanned to be searched in an online database. This is why it is critical to keep your contact information current!
